Minister’s Message – International Biodiversity Day

Today, as we celebrate the International Biodiversity Day, we are reminded that biodiversity is the foundation of life and the key to our well-being, economy, and future. Seychelles is blessed with extraordinary natural heritage, from our endemic species and forests to our wetlands and coral reefs. Yet, biodiversity worldwide continues to face growing threats from habitat loss, climate change, and species extinction.

This year’s theme, “Acting Locally for Global Action,” highlights the importance of every effort, no matter how small, in protecting nature. Seychelles has made significant progress in biodiversity conservation through protected areas, ecosystem restoration, and strengthened environmental governance. However, much more remains to be done.

Protecting biodiversity requires a whole-of-society approach; a collective effort from government, communities, NGOs, schools, and the private sector. Let us work together to safeguard our unique biodiversity for present and future generations and ensure that we put nature on a path to recovery.
