Minister’s Message – World Environment Day

"Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future."

Today, as Seychelles joins the rest of the world in celebrating World Environment Day 2026, we are reminded of the invaluable role that nature plays in sustaining life, supporting our economy, and shaping our identity as an island nation.

This year's theme, "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future," calls upon us to recognise that nature is not only increasingly threatened by climate change, but that it also provides some of the most effective solutions for addressing the climate crisis. From our coral reefs and mangroves to our forests and seagrass meadows, nature protects our shores, stores carbon, supports biodiversity, and sustains the livelihoods of our people.

As Seychellois, we have always shared a close connection with the natural environment. Our oceans, beaches, mountains, and unique biodiversity are a source of pride and an integral part of our national heritage. Protecting these natural assets is therefore not simply an environmental responsibility—it is an investment in our future and in the wellbeing of generations to come.

This year’s World Environment Day also serves as a call to action in order to address the tripple planetory crisis- that is,  Climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss. Whilst at the same time recognizing the growing unsustainable consumption patterns placing increasing pressure on our environment. Addressing these challenges requires collective effort and commitment from all sectors of society.

With recent impacts felt from the crisis in the middle east , there is a stark reminder more than ever that we must accelerate the transition towards renewable energy, improve energy efficiency, reduce waste generation, and embrace more sustainable practices in our homes, workplaces, schools, and communities. These actions not only help reduce our environmental footprint but also strengthen our resilience and contribute to a greener and more sustainable Seychelles.

The global campaign for World Environment Day 2026 reminds us that we need to turn commitment into action and ambition into results. Let us therefore draw inspiration from nature and work together to build a future that is cleaner, greener, more resilient, and more sustainable. Let us recognise that the actions we take today will determine the future we leave to generations yet to come.

Happy World Environment Day 2026.
